The Knitting Olympics

So, I might be crazy, but I have joined Stephanie's Knitting Olympics. I'm going to make this, but in pink and grey. Wish me luck! It's my first Fair Isle attempt... I hope I didn't bite off more than I can chew.

Baby Blanket

This is a baby blanket I made for my friend Jill's baby Oliver, who was born in either late September or early October, I can't remember. I just finished it last night! I kept putting it aside because it was so boring to make, but finally, I buckled down. The yarn is some old stuff my grandmother gave me, and it's not super nice, but it is machine washable and dryable, so that's a plus for baby stuff.

I Made Mittens!

They're Hermione's Cable and Bobble Mittens, to match the Hatmione. I swear, the Harry Potter knitting is now over. I actually chose these patterns because I liked them, not because they were Harry Potter. These are the first mittens I've made, and I'm pretty happy with the way they came out. For some reason, I ended up knitting the thumbs backwards, and I can't figure out why. The pattern said use all knits, but I had to use all purls to get it to work out. Oh well, it worked, and it looks normal.

SP 7 Questionnaire

1. Are you a yarn snob (do you prefer higher quality and/or natural fibers)? Do you avoid Red Heart and Lion Brand?
Yes. I prefer higher quality materials, mostly, although there can be a time & a place for Red Heart or Lion Brand. Just not for something that I might wear!

2. Do you spin? Crochet?
nope. nope.

3. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
I have a needle roll that my SP 6 gave me for my straight needles. Then I have the Denise kit, so those are all contained. My other circulars and DPNs I keep in the case they come in when you buy them, in a ziplock bag.

4. How long have you been knitting? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
I've been knitting for about 2 years. I guess intermediate.

5. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
Yes, here: Amazon WishList and here: Canadian Amazon WishList

6. What's your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products etc.)
lavendar. I have an intense dislike for anything vanilla scented that I'm not going to eat.

7. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?
Yes. Dark Chocolate. I like the slightly bitter kind. I also like any kind of candy that I can't buy in the US except Nestle Aeros. I don't like anything involving a salty/sweet combo (like the Take 5)

8. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do?
needlepoint, scrapbooking, beading

9. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
I like mostly indie (for lack of a better term) rock music. The stuff I have listed on my Amazon wishlist is a good cross-sample of this kind of music. Yep, I can play MP3s and I have an iPod.

10. What's your favorite color? Or--do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can't stand?
I really like pink. And light purple and yellow and blue and green. I can't think of colors I hate, really.

11. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
I live by myself, but my dad lives nearby. No pets.

12. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?
yes to the scarves, hats, and mittens. No to the ponchos.

13. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with?
lately, I've been using a lot of Cascade 220, which I really like, and it isn't too expensive!

14. What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
scratchy acrylics.

15. What is/are your current knitting obsession/s?
hats. and cables.

16. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
not sure... anything that isn't too boring, like the zillions of baby blankets I've been working on.

17. What are you knitting right now?
a baby blanket, Hermione's cable & bobble mittens (but those should be done this week), and I have to do the seaming up on my Kyoto.

18. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?
yes! Who wouldn't?

19. Do you prefer straight or circular needles?
circs

20. Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
bamboo, although I do like the Denises, too

21. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?

My mom taught me.

23. How old is your oldest UFO?
the kyoto. I started in July. Stalled on the seaming up.

24. What is your favorite animated character or a favorite animal/bird?
The Little Twin Stars. They are part of the Sanrio/Hello Kitty family, but can be hard to find!

25. What is your favorite holiday?
My birthday. and Christmas.

26. Is there anything that you collect?
No.

27. What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
Vogue Knitting

28. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on?
The pattern for Ribby Cardi. Also, I think there are a couple books on my Amazon list.

29. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?
hum. Can't think of any right now. Usually I deal with them as they come up in patterns.

30. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?
I have never tried socks, but my SP5 did send me some stuff to get started. I just haven't bought any sock yarn yet. I have no idea what my foot measurements are, but I wear US 7/Euro 37/UK 4.5 shoes. (I really like shoes, that's how I know all the sizes!)

31. When is your birthday? (mm/dd)
May 12

Hatmiones!

So, look what I did over Christmas! I made some Hatmiones. The blue one is for me. The yellow one is for my cousin Anne Yvette. She just moved from New Orleans to New York, and she doesn't have too many winter clothes. I had her try on my blue one, and it was a little tall for her, so I shortened the ribbing on hers. I don't know if I like the way it looks shorter, but hopefully it will fit her better.
